At St Nicholas we value all of our children and are committed to giving every child the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
Mrs Emma Baines our SENCo (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) is available if you have any issues/ questions regarding Special Needs. Parents can make an appointment to see Mrs Baines on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.
All of our staff are committed to ensuring that children make progress in school and achieve to the very highest of their ability. Any child who needs extra support are identified as early as possible and individual, achievable targets that move children on in their learning are set. Teachers make provision for these children to work on and achieve these targets in curriculum time. If your child’s class teacher thinks that your child may require further support, they will be referred to our SENCo for assessment. Mrs Baines, our SENCo (Special Needs Coordinator) works very closely with teaching staff and teaching assistants to provide support for children with special educational needs within our school. This support takes many forms;
A child may need additional assessing from the SENCo to check their levels in reading, spelling, receptive language and nonverbal ability. This assessment takes place if a class teacher raises concern about their abilities in class. From this assessment, we can see if any additional support is needed for your child.
We follow the Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle for our SEND pupils using IEP (Individual Education Plans), EHATs (Early Help Assessment Tool) and Annual Reviews where needed to inform this process.
As a school, we provide support in class through differentiating work, providing support materials and providing interventions in reading, writing, speaking and listening and maths to support and raise attainment.
We also run interventions to support our pupils’ social and emotional needs these are done through a mixture of outside agency support with referrals to YPAS & PSS. The interventions are a mixture of small group interventions and individual (one to one 1:1) support.
Mrs Baines works closely with outside agencies to provide support for children with SEND including their emotional needs, we working with Speech and Language (SaLT), Educational Psychology Service, Sensory Service, CAMHS. We also have support from outreach teams at Springwood Heath and we consult other charities such as ADDvanced Solutions and the Isabella Trust for advice and support as needed.
